If you’re new to social media, the concept of a #hashtag is a weird one – we admit it. But we promise it is important.
Simply put, a # allows people to find what you’re sharing on social media. Think of it this way: There are 500 million tweets sent per day. Yup. 500 million. PER DAY. Imagine your shoppers trying to find your posts in amongst all those other tweets. Impossible.
What a # does, is allow people to search for words and terms that matter to them, so they can see tweets (also referred to as content) that only relate to their interests.
So, by adding #WDYT (this stands for What Do You Think) to your tweets, anyone looking for #WDYT content will find yours. More importantly, it allows us to find your content and share it with our bigger audience. This is how thousands of more people start to learn about your store and your products.
It’s the same idea with the name of your town. For example, #Stroud. People can look for content around #Stroud and yours will come up.
Now, let’s try an @mention (pronounced “at mention”). Everyone on Twitter has a username. It’s often called a handle. Every single one starts with an @ symbol. Ours, for example, is @HeyWDYT. Your could be @yourshopname, or whatever you want. (Our guide to setting up a Twitter account is here and is really simple).
If someone mentions your shop in one of their tweets, you’ll get a notification in Twitter allowing you to see what they’ve written and reply to them. It also allows for easy searching and tracking.
